What does being/working “union” really mean to our organization and the members we support?
As you have probably already heard the working definition of a union employee is as follows:
“An organization of workers formed for the purpose of advancing its members’ interests in respect to wages, benefits, and working conditions. Members of a labor union with job protection under a collective bargaining agreement with the employer”
So WHAT? What does this mean for the average employee looking to start out in this industry?
1. Working a union job means…Being offered LIVABLE wages! Per our wage sheets effective until June 2020 a UNION journeymen plasterer starts off at $27.14/hr. While minimum wage throughout the state of Indiana is shown below…
2. Not to mention UNION jobs offer health insurance that could support your loved ones if something were to go wrong unexpectedly. Never worry about being able to afford/pay out of pocket for health care again! Union Plus stated that “92% of union workers have job-related health care, whereas only 68% of NON-UNION workers can say they have coverage.”
3. We also offer STRENGTH in numbers. Our members have local contacts they can contact if job-related questions arise. You are never truly alone when you’re a valued member of a union. We fight for better work conditions, competitive pay, and SUPPORT our members. Become part of something bigger than yourself with a local union!
